From Joseph L. Conteh, Project Manager at the Makankisa Child Care Centre in Yele, Sierra Leone:
The idea of establishing and implementing a mini local poultry is to grow and rear our own local chicken for meat and eggs to avoid the imported eggs and chicken meat which often is expensive and less valuable as compared to our local breed.
The beginning is always difficult but we have constructed a small poultry house behind and connected to one of the pit latrine buildings. I have bought seven chickens for a start and two of them have started laying eggs. This is just a trial as no specific funds have been laid down for poultry – the funds I have used are from the monthly running cost with tight management from other budget items.
