From Joseph L. Conteh, Project Manager:

The routine at the centre for the children had been, play, eat, pray and sleep. In trying to make these children useful as one of our objectives, I decided that we should introduce the education aspect.

Since we were entering into the long holiday when schools will be closed, I decided to conduct a summer school for our children to introduce most of them who haven’t started schooling to have a feel of it before schools reopen in September when they will all be sent to school.

I further thought that our organization stands to benefit the community and therefore, decided to include the village children to this initiative. I held a meeting with the parents of the children in the village, they supported the idea and were happy. The list made of the town children went up to 35 that day.

In the project of the Summer school, I, therefore, targeted 60 children as beneficiaries. I decided to lobby locally for school materials like primary school textbooks, etc. I approached one Head Master of the S.D.A. Primary school in Yele. He was happy with the idea and therefore decided to share with me some materials which I so much appreciated.

He donated the following:

  • Blackboard chalks – 2 boxes
  • Renovator (paint) for blackboard – 1 tin
  • Mathematics books for classes 1 – 5 – 5 books
  • Science lesson books for classes 3 – 5 – 4 books
  • Social studies books for classes 1 – 5 – 6 books
  • English readers for classes 1 – 5 – 19 books
  • Supplementary readers (story readers) for classes 1 – 3 – 7 books

He further loaned me 30 pieces of Pre-school writing slates to be returned when the summer school ends.

On 17th July 2018, we started the summer school with 53 children in attendance.
